Thinking about changing your course or leaving your course? It may take time to register for your course and your university life, and sometimes students want to change course, university, or college – or not want to study at all. There is a lot to consider when making decisions and different options to explore.

If you think that the course you are studying is not entirely appropriate for you, it is possible to transfer it to another course, either in the same university or in a course at another university or a university.

The transfer process varies between universities and universities and changing or laving from one course to another. You will normally have to complete certain documents, such as a statement that you want to change or a complete application form when you ar changing your course. You may also need to attend an interview or produce additional work before your application can be considered. Finalization can take from a few days to several weeks.

The first thing to do is talk to your local office or tutor. They will be able to discuss your options with you – whether it’s getting support in place to help you succeed in your current class, or explaining what you need to do to move on to another class – and advising you on the next steps.

  • Things to consider

  1. Why do you want to change courses? You will have to give your reasons and show that you take your studies seriously.
  2. Can you modify the modules of your current course? This will depend on which modules you want to change, as you will need to complete a number of required modules to qualify. You may be able to upgrade to other modules, but if a module is oversubscribed, you may not be able to.
  3. Is there a course on a similar subject or in the same department that you want to transfer? Or are you interested in completely different courses? Do your research before talking to your guardian or department to find out what might be available and what interests you before changing your course.
  4. Extra Work: If you are able to change your course, you may need to catch up on the work you missed for the course you are taking.
  5. Credit Transfer: You may be able to transfer course credits already earned, but if the course you want to transfer is very different, it may not be possible and you may need to start the new course at the very beginning. This could mean another year of tuition, accommodation and other expenses.

Transferring to a different course at the same university or college

It may be possible to change courses at the same university or college. You will need to search for another course and find answers to the following questions:

  1. Are there spaces on the new course? If there are none, are there any other related courses that you could consider transferring? Try to find out more about the courses offered in the department that interests you.
  2. Do you meet the entry requirements for the course you wish to transfer? Even if you have already completed university or college, you may also need to meet some specific knowledge requirements (such as level A in a given subject).
  3. Would the relevant departments accept your transfer? You will need to discuss your new course choice with the course tutor to make sure it is right for you. You may also need to attend an official interview.
  4. When can you transfer? Some universities and colleges allow students to change courses in the first semester, but you may have to wait until the next academic year.
