This one year top up BCU Building Services Engineering degree course prepares you for an exciting and challenging career in the construction industry. The course centres around careful deployment of engineering rules and principles as well as developing and supporting the know-how necessary to apply technology to wide range building services engineering problems and processes.

This one year top-up degree course will enable you to effectively maintain and optimally manage services technology in large scale and complex buildings including but not limited to commercial and industrial buildings, office, health and educational buildings..

The course will provide you with a range of teaching and learning experiences to build on and refine your existing skills and develop motivational drive so that you can contribute to a changing society, particularly within the field of Building Services Engineering. The proposed course will inspire you to develop a detailed appreciation and ability to analyse complex building services design problems, to assess alternative building services systems most suited to address the problem based on particular set of technical client requirements and constraints to arrive at an optimal solutions.

In formulating a particular solution you should bear in mind cost, quality, operation  and energy efficiency in relation to the wider procurement and contractual context of the construction process and the actors involved in that process – all set within the social, regulatory, technical and sustainable context of the UK and global development industry.

The course provides a curriculum which encourage the study of Building Services Engineering in a broad based holistic manner, together with personal qualities of observation, critical analysis, problem-solving and rational judgement and communication appropriate for the profession. This will enable you to undertake independent critical analysis, enhancing your intellectual development towards developing your abilities as a leading building services engineer.

The course is fundamentally based upon the core competencies which are outlined by the professional institute CIBSE which gives you a good foundation for your future career. We focus on the core technical knowledge, such as engineering principles, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, building management systems, BIM and facilities management and integrated building simulation and design underpinned by legal and regulatory framework knowledge required for a career in building services engineering.

This course is run as a one-year top-up degree (year three) and, subject to demand, may also be available as a full three-year degree.
